As I get back into training for the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler, I’ve been mixing in some yoga to my training. Well, the other night I had the pleasure of taking a “Power Vinyasa” class at the Y. Now, I’ve done yoga at home with a yoga DVD to stretch after running and I took a class at another yoga studio nearby. But this class… KICKED MY ASS!! I had sore muscles I didn’t even know I had.
And as I’m standing/leaning/laying there trying to hold my body in an impossible pose and my muscles are straining back at me I look over at the instructor and she’s making it look effortless. And a thought ran through my head:
“Has anyone ever seen a fat yoga instructor?”
I’m not inferring anything mean by that. Heck, stand me next to a yoga instructor and I’m fat. It’s just that every yoga instructor I’ve ever seen is sinewey thin. And here is a room of people with normal bodies just trying to improve themselves and trying to keep up with a body that we can’t attain. I guess my hope is I’d like to see someone with a body like mine leading a yoga class and setting an example that the rest of us can actually accomplish.
